How do I become an Approved Mediator with New York Peace Institute?

1.  Complete our Basic Mediation Training (If you completed a basic mediation training with a different agency you may be eligible to apply directly for our Apprenticeship Program. For specific details, please see the Apprenticeship FAQ section.)
2.  Complete the 12-week classroom portion of the Apprenticeship Program
3.  Pass the New York Peace Institute video evaluation

What is the New York Peace Institute video evaluation?
Individuals are required to pass a video evaluation in order to become Approved New York Peace Institute Mediators. This evaluation is designed to give individuals the chance to demonstrate their mediation skills during an hour-long mediation role play. This role play is recorded and evaluated by trained New York Peace Institute Video Evaluators. Individuals will participate in a video preparation session where they will learn about the evaluation process and criteria. Individuals must take their video evaluation within three months of completing the 12-week classroom portion of the Apprenticeship Program, and they have 2 opportunities to pass the evaluation. This evaluation is the capstone of our program and helps ensure quality and consistency in our mediator pool, and also gives those being evaluated an opportunity to receive expert feedback to strengthen their skills.

Are scholarships available for the training programs?
We have a limited number of scholarships available for our Basic Mediation Training and Apprenticeship Program and the scholarship application process is highly competitive. We receive dozens of scholarship requests annually and work hard to offer financial assistance; however, as a growing nonprofit organization our ability to do this is often limited. One way which we’re able to do this is by offering partial scholarships. Partial scholarships allow us to share the small pot of scholarship funds we have among many participants. Although we occasionally grant full scholarships, more often we provide partial scholarships to supplement the contribution people can make toward the program and offset the total cost. We also offer payment plans to help ease the payment burden.

Please read our Scholarship Eligibility Criteria to learn more about how we make scholarship decisions. The strongest scholarship applicants are individuals who meet a number of the eligibility criteria, so please be sure to let us know all of the things that make you a strong scholarship applicant.

Unfortunately, we aren’t able to offer scholarships for advanced trainings; however, we’re happy to discuss payment plan options with you.

What advanced training opportunities are there at NYPI?
Lots! Our advanced and specialized trainings are listed on the Training Center webpage and we’re constantly updating this list. These trainings are open to the public and to our New York Peace Institute mediators and trainees.

In addition, we provide FREE specialized mediation training for Approved New York Peace Institute Mediators in the following areas: Juvenile Delinquency, Special Education, Schools, Civil Court, Criminal Court, and Conflict Coaching. Approved Mediators also have access to in-services throughout the year, which provide in-depth information on areas such as child abuse, domestic violence, agreement writing, and other issues that may emerge during the mediation process.

How quickly can I become a volunteer mediator with New York Peace Institute?
It’s a good question with a bit of a murky answer: it depends. In order to become a New York Peace Institute Approved Mediator you’ll need to:

  1. Complete our Basic Mediation Training (If you completed a basic mediation training with a different agency you may be eligible to apply directly for our Apprenticeship Program. For specific details, please see the Apprenticeship FAQ section
  2. Complete our Apprenticeship Program
  3. Pass the New York Peace Institute video evaluation

It will take at least 5 months from the start of the basic mediation training to become an Approved Mediator with the New York Peace Institute. Typically, it takes people between 6-12 months (and sometimes longer) to get approved. The reality is, how quickly you get approved depends on when you take the Basic Mediation Training and Apprenticeship Program, and how quickly you fulfill the Apprenticeship Program Requirements. Individuals are required to take their video evaluation within three months of completing the Apprenticeship Program and have two chances to pass the evaluation. It’s not unusual for people not to pass their evaluation the first time around, which means that getting approved takes longer for some people than for others. Also, not everyone who trains with us passes their video evaluation and becomes an Approved New York Peace Institute mediator.

Can I observe a case?
New York Peace Institute Approved Mediators and Apprentices can observe cases at our Brooklyn and Manhattan Mediation Centers; however, we’re not able to allow members of the public to observe cases. Our clients are our number one priority and in order to protect their confidentiality and sense of privacy and safety, we permit only individuals who are working with New York Peace Institute to observe cases.
