Small Claims Diversion Mediation Program Intern (Brooklyn)


Internship Description:

The Small Claims Diversion Mediation Program exposes interns to a range of cases, including breaches of contract, noise complaints, real and personal property violations, rules and regulations disputes, withheld security deposits, and violations of town or city ordinances. Interns will also have the opportunity to learn more about our other services, including Criminal Court, Special Education, family and school based mediation programs as well as Lemon Law arbitration.

Interns use their mediation skills of active listening, reflection, and reframing on the phone with clients. They will also have the opportunity to observe mediations, debrief with our vast and diverse group of mediators, experience the dynamics of the Brooklyn Civil and Small Claims Court, and attend various presentations and conferences. Our interns do work that is key to the success of our organization and receive legal experience separate from the conventional legal setting.

We depend on our interns to maintain extensive contact with our clients – explaining our mediation services, listening to their concerns, mailing out notices of hearings, and delivering stipulations of settlements to the court. Our interns update our client database, help maintain the court cases (filing, organizing), and support our mediation staff


We are looking for independent individuals with strong phone communication skills (who are comfortable making cold calls), who have an understanding of (or willingness to learn) office administration and database management as well as an open mind, a great attitude, and ability to multi-task. Reliability is essential and, because we’re a mediation center, we deal with A LOT of sensitive issues, so you must be able to deal with difficult situations, constructive criticism, and intense personalities.

We require a minimum of 15 hours/week for at least 3 months, but we love interns who are able to make full-time or long-term commitments! And, to serve our diverse Brooklyn population, we encourage applicants who are fluent in other languages!

This position is unpaid, but academic credits are available.
